Artistic Statement

Chezale Rodriguez

My purpose is to empower, uplift, celebrate, heal, truth tell, honor self, acknowledge our cultural heritage and histories, actively engage in social change while living in a spirit of gratitude. My artistry is just as multidimensional as we are as human beings. Whether I am creating and teaching movement, setting a performance, writing and recording an original song or giving life to a script...my deepest inspirations are rooted in a core authenticity of spirit, life experience and story that move a student or audience to wonder, to connect, to reflect, to learn, to reminisce and to feel transformed as a result.

Recently, I have undergone my own personal transformation in the face of a life-altering event. In September of 2023, I experienced a devastating spinal cord injury as a result of a near fatal car accident, leaving me with incomplete paralysis, greatly impacting my mobility and daily life. Though this has been a major detour and challenging transition, I feel curious and inspired to push forward in my work.

My hope is to help bridge the gaps within the arts between people of diverse abilities and communities by experiencing opportunities for greater accessibility, equity, inclusion and visibility. While focusing on my healing journey towards recovery, I aspire to learn, advocate and use my spectrum of artistic expression as an example that despite life's challenges, we can ALL be amplified and we are ALL able.
